Identity Theft

with 12 comments

When I logged into SL tonight, I was made aware that Identity Theft isn’t just a topic gaining media coverage because of concerned consumer and financial agencies in “First Life”. The truth is, Identity Theft is equally creepy and scary in Second Life.

A couple of weeks ago, my sister Aradia passed me a notecard of a conversation between her and another SL resident that made her a bit uneasy. The other person claimed to be working on a project with Naughty and wanted to hire her as a model. Anyone that is familiar with the fashion world of SL knows that Amby and Lost don’t exactly collaborate with other designers actually seemed to be having issues lately with copycat skin designers. Knowing this, Ara was suspicious of the intent of the conversation and politely declined to send the designer any photos of herself.

Fast forward to today. Ara was notified of this particular Flickr profile.

On the profile you will find photos that are obviously Ara, and before her Mariya, with the flickr page owner claiming the photos are her, and Photo descriptions like “You may have seen these on Aradia Dielli’s blog and that is because she stole them from me because they were on my profile a while ago” and beneath a photo snapped of Mariya “Just a modeling picture someone took of me”

What’s funny is that if the photos this delusional girl used weren’t two of the more recognized faces in SL, the deception may have slipped by unnoticed. Think about it though, how creepy is it to think that someone who appears to need a bit of psychological counseling is stalking you while you shop, snapping photos of you, or stealing Flickr photos and claiming to be you? This needs to stop…

Now there is no way to know if the person claiming to represent Naughty and this photo thief are the same person, but i think it is worth putting a warning out there that while the vast majority of people you come across in SL are geniune, there is no rule that prevents the mentally unstable from accessing a computer and deceiving everyone they come in contact with.

  2. After I posted this Lindsey contacted me in world, and just said “hellos”.

I started looking at her profile and…wow…that’s all I can say. By the way, one of the people she lists as her “sister” is the one who was claiming to represent Naughty in an effort to get photos from Ara. So I have no doubt now that the incidents are related.

  4. […] Identity Theft in SL […]

  5. I actually met this person on the Orientation Isle when I had to go through. She was harassing people and she was the first person I muted. Since then I’ve seen her in world and she has a horrible attitude problem, and I’m pretty sure her apology is not genuine. Completely immature crazy person.

but it’s like your wise president from a while ago said: “you can fool some of the people, all of the time; and all of the people, some of the time; but you can’t fool all the people, all the time”
