Fashion Feed of SL

Fashion Feed of SL . COM

Do you ever get one of those hairbrained ideas? You know “hairbrained”…on of those snippets of thought that wiggle into your brain like an itty bitty hair, like a sliver you just can’t pull loose? A couple of months ago that happened to me. I can’t pinpoint exactly when or how it was prompted, but I thought “I wish there was another Fashion Feed”.

When I told my friends I wanted to see if I could work out how to create another feed, one moderated and content controlled, they said I was nuts…
“Great idea…but it takes too much bandwidth. Fashion Planet is on the owner’s webserver. Too expensive…”

As much as I love Fashion Planet (*hi my name is Cari, and I’m a Fashion Planet addict, I last refreshed the page 31 times in one day*) I realized that I was scrolling….scrolling…to find a post that caught my eye…piqued my interest….really made me want to SHOP.

So I did a bit of research. How much bandwidth really? Was there a solution I could wrap my semi tech savvy brain around? I posted an experiment with this blog post…asking readers to click a link to a Mac blog feed on my host’s server. (P.S. Thank you so much to everyone who humored me and clicked) There was alot of traffic generated but I was still given the *thumbs up* from my host.

Sooooo…..Fashion Feed of SL was born. I started adding my favorite Second Life fashion blogs to it. For a while, I was very guarded to talk about the project, but now that Madi outed me on the Rummage Box, I’ve received so much positive feedback that I’m a bit overwhelmed.

Because I wasn’t really prepared for anyone to actually take the time to be interested in my lil’ pet project, I really had not spelled out the purpose of my feed to anyone. I will be adding this detail to my About page…

The primary focus of the Fashion Feed of SL is to feature blog posts (in one handy dandy location) that:
1. Male me want to shop…like RIGHT NOW!
2. Entertain me or give me an insight about a fellow fashion lover’s style, forcing me to see fashion outside my own “style box”
3. Keeps me informed of events promoting SL fashion: fashion shows, magazine releases, fundraisers, and “dress to the nines and have a blast” events

Tossing in with that mix, I wanted to create a “filtered feed”: A compilation of content that was closely moderated to resolve issues with multiple posts, 2 thousand 1 hundred and 86 declarations of marriage proposal intentions to the same new release, uninformative portfolio shots disguised as reviews, and more drama than you get on CBS daytime soaps.

So. I’m really excited to discover fashion blogs that exist outside the Fashion Planet box, but I have a few disclaimers:
1. Blogs submitted for review must be “established fashion blogs”: you’ve been around at least a month, and blog about fashion related topics a majority of the time (or you are a designer with uber great stuffs that I wanna have RIGHT NOW by any means necessary)
2. You have quality content. Nice non-pixely photos, location slurls, and you have an opinion…basically you make me want to SHOP and help me get there QUICKER
3. You understand that the feed is moderated. It will be reviewed regularly for multiple posts, irrelavent content, “another review of XYZ”, and also be aware that individual posts may be filtered. and….*ducks under the desk and hides* blogs may be Unsubscribed from the feed.
4. And one of my pet peeves (coz I surf the net at the office) PLEASE for the LOVE OF ALL THAT IS HOLY…put your naked pictures after a cut. If you don’t know how to do this…let me know…I would be more than ecstatic to help you learn how.

Ok. So I’ve blabbered enough. I just want to be as open and honest about my intentions so nobody yells at me later. (I’m sensitive and take matters to heart…so go easy on me)

I’m really really open to feedback if you want to IM me in world (Carissa Crimson) or email me at cari[dot]crim[at]gmail[dot]com

  3. Dang it Kitty! your mouth is just CAVERNOUS…and while admittedly that makes for great porn…you can’t keep a secret to save your trampy lil life! *winks*

@Steph. Thank you so much for the encouragement. Our conversation today really helped to pull me out of my shell with this project. It really meant so much to me.

  7. YAY Im so happy to hear this. I was getting very discouraged going through Fashion Planet cuz it seems now everyone and their dog had a feed and half the stuff was irrelavent.

Also as a side note.. I have my stores feed on there and once i posted … all that irrelivent posting pushed it off the page within like an hours time. So I hope this helps other designers out… in fact i know it will.

So thank you!!! and keep up the great work. The site looks beautiful and it’s so clean. YAY

  9. Carissa:
I’m trying to get to the site, I’m guessing it’s just temporarily down. If that’s the case, I’d love to be added — with your approval, of course. I am very impressed with your decision to create a less spam-y feed, and so I’ll understand if I don’t quite make the cut, but I’m hoping so. >;3 If the application is available again soon, please let me know.
